Did you see the Hooray for Surprises stamp set and dies bundle? The Hooray For Surprises stamp set and dies caught my eye when they were released in the latest Stampin’ Up catalog.

However, I was stumped on how to easily use the dies for designing interactive cards. With a little trial-and-error, I figured out an easy method to use them for great results!

Follow these directions for making the template, stamping the inside secret message, and assembling a fun card. The directions I wrote out below can be applied to all of the interactive dies in this bundle for many endlessly different cards and projects.

See below for how to create this fun Birthday Candle Wish Surprise Card:

How to make a Birthday Candle Wish Surprise Card :

Cut your cardstock:

  • Basic White
    • 8-1/2” x 5-1/2” folded at 4-1/4” for your cardbase
    • (3) 2-1/4” x 5-1/2”
  • Calypso Coral DSP: 3-1/2” x 5-1/2”

Line up the Surprise dies:

  • Start with the three pieces of basic white cardstock. Pick one for the top to be decorated, one for the template, and one for the “surprise” sentiment to be revealed on the bottom once the top is ripped open.
  • Next, cut the “template” and the top layer. Stack the two pieces together and run through the Cut & Emboss Machine at the same time so that the die is placed in the exact same spot on each piece. Keep in mind that these dies do not cut all the way through. The shape will stay attached in a few little places, making it easy to tear out.
  • Then, complete the “template” by pulling out the die-cut piece of only one piece. You will be able to use this over and over if you are making more cards with the same size layers. DO NOT pull out the die-cut piece of the other layer – that is for the top of the card and for you to stamp and decorate.

  • Next, stamp the secret message. The message will be hidden until the tab is pulled off. Lay the template over the bottom white layer (this one has not been die-cut) and stamp your sentiment in the opening.
  • Finally, let’s decorate your top layer. This layer was die-cut, but NOT torn out. I recommend to be gentle with it. I started by stamping the “open here” on the right side of the pull tab so the recipient would know what to do with it. Then, stamp the cakes and candles, ensuring the flames are over the die-cut area.

  • Adhere the decorated top layer with the cakes to the bottom layer with the stamped sentiment (not die-cut). Only put adhesive around the edges and NOT over the sentiment. Only the die-cut area is able to be torn off to reveal a surprise message.
  • Lastly, adhere this to your card front over the DSP.
